STATEMENT ON SETTLEMENT OF LIBEL LAWSUIT AGAINST
BOSTON HERALD AND BOSTON HERALD RETRACTION
Release date:
22 December 2005
Delta Oil, a leading independent
Saudi-owned oil and gas company,
announces that it has reached
settlement of its libel lawsuit
against the Boston Herald (“The
Herald”) filed in the United
States District Court for the
District of Massachusetts. The
suit arose from an article
published in The Herald on 10
December 2001, containing
incorrect information about the
Company, its ownership, and its
implied business links. Under
the settlement, The Herald
issued a correction of the story
in its edition of 13 July 2005,
apologized to Delta and its
owner, and paid the Company a
cash settlement, which Delta
will donate to the Red Cross to
assist in its work in helping
the victims of disasters and
conflicts worldwide.
The
article, which was the subject
of the suit, stated that
Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi
appeared to be “the prime force”
behind Delta Oil. Mr. Al-Amoudi
does not now, nor has he ever,
controlled or owned Delta Oil.
Furthermore, on 19 February
2002, The Herald printed a
retraction stating that it was
incorrect in reporting that Mr.
Al-Amoudi had ties to terrorist
groups, but neglected to correct
the misstatement regarding Delta
Oil. The 13 July 2005 Herald
correction, states that “it was
incorrect to state or imply that
Mr. Al-Amoudi had an ownership
interest in Delta Oil or was a
prime force in the company."
The correction also made clear
that "the Herald did not report
or intend to imply that Delta
Oil or its owner was in any way
linked to Al-Qaeda or any
terrorist group. The Herald
regrets the error.” Delta Oil
has never been affiliated or
linked in any way with any
terrorist organizations, and
welcomes the Herald's disavowal
of any statement or suggestion
to the contrary and its apology.
